Harradence Prize

Description: The CTLA created the Harradence Prize in 1994 to recognize the distinguished career of Milt Harradence, whose professional aspirations and achievements as a criminal defence lawyer and a Justice in the Court of Appeal reflect the principles upon which our association is founded. This award is normally given to experienced counsel who have demonstrated the following characteristics which were so much appreciated in Mr. Justice Harradence:
  • Protection of the rights of accused persons and those who have suffered harm as a result of government action;
  • Achieved the highest standards of advocacy and ensured the preservation of the adversay system and trial by jury;
  • Upheld the honour and dignity of the profession;
  • Encouraged and developed the recognition of the importance of due process of law in Canadian life and society generally.

Bruce Gunn Junior Barrister Award

Description:Also known as the "Top Gunn" award, this annual award recognizes a junior lawyer who shows great promise in the area of criminal law. The award was created in 2006 to honour Mr. Bruce Gunn who was a passionate advocate known for his imaginative and zealous defence work, particularly in the area of impaired driving. The recipient of this award should have the following qualifications:
  • Between two and five years experience at the bar;
  • Demonstrated a passion and aptitude for criminal law;
  • A commitment to pro bono work;
  • Shown a willingness to assist other counsel, unrepresented accused and the courts.
